Once Upon Is Doing Time
Once Upon A Time, there was a little girl who dreamed of working for herself. When she grew up, she started a business and called it “My Dreamy Pie.” She LOVED baking pies, and everyone told her they were so delicious she should sell them, and work for herself and not “The Man.” So one day, she did it. She heard all about the bright lights of owning your own business – working your own hours, getting all the profits for yourself, having others work for you” She quit her job, opened up her shop and started to sell her pies. She was disappointed and went to see the Wizard to find out why she was so unhappy.
“Mr. Wizard, I followed the Yellow Brick Rd – I found what I was happy doing, I followed my Passion. I make great pies – but where are my rewards for opening my business? There’s nobody to help me, I can’t pay myself, I have to keep track of my expenses, I have to do all the marketing myself. I thought if I followed my passion I would have all the customers I wanted, and employees working for me; that I’d only have to work whenever I wanted. What did I do wrong?”
The Wizard gently smiled, wrapped his arms around her shoulder and said, “My child, you have simply fallen for the Myth of Business Ownership – otherwise known as the E-Myth.”
“You have all that has been promised you by the bright lights – you CAN work whenever you want, as long as you want to work long days & nights. You CAN have people work for you – if you can pay them a decent wage. You CAN have all the profits, when they are there to take.”
The moral of the story is: There are many benefits to owning your own business, but it is not for everyone. It takes more than following your passion – it takes focus & commitment. Do you have what it takes to run your own business? When you are working for another, you see all the glory they have – the money, the adoration, the toys, etc. What you didn’t get the chance to witness was the blood, sweat & tears that went into it the years before you got there. Remember that. Most “overnight successes” happen in 10 years. There’s always more to the story. Yes, there are exceptions – some businesses grow big right out of the box, some take years; some take centuries.
I hope you can and do follow your passion – and I hope you add focus & commitment to it so that you can succeed in whatever business/industry your heart desires. To Your Success!
